One of the outstanding pioneer county librarians he went on to become a distinguished library historian and, in 1957, the first British Professor of Library Studies. His publications included The national library service (1947); Librarianship: essays in applied bibliography (1949); British bird books: an index to British ornithology (1951); The heritage of the English library (1964); The English library: sources and history, a revision of his Origins of the English library (1958). He was active in the LA, Honorary Treasurer 1946-1953, President in 1958 and an Honorary Fellow in 1963.
